History of MAWE

The Massachusetts Association for Women in Education began in 1921 as an informal group of high school deans, who were pioneers in the student personnel profession. In late 1924 the group became the Massachusetts Branch of the National Association of Deans. The group become independent of the national organization in 1928 and was renamed the Massachusetts Association of Deans and Advisors of Girls. The aims of the group were to determine the duties of deans and to discuss societal influences on and opportunities for adolescent girls. In the fall of 1961 the name was changed to include counselors (Massachusetts Association of Women Deans and Counselors), and in 1973 Administrators were added to the title, (Massachusetts Association for Women's Deans, Administrators and Counselors).

In 1990 the National Association voted to change the name to the National Association for Women in Education (NAWE); Massachusetts followed suit in 1991, voting in the new name - The Massachusetts Association for Women in Education (MAWE). In 1999, the National Association dissolved.   At that time, the MAWE leadership discussed the value of remaining an independent organization, and it was unanimously decided that MAWE served and still serves a great value to our members past, present and future.

The current MAWE Executive Board and the MAWE membership strives to acknowledge the actions and achievements of women in the field of higher education. We work to provide opportunities for mentoring, networking, recognition and social exchange. Female professionals from all tracks of the higher education realm are invited to participate in and plan upcoming MAWE events. To learn more visit the Connections page.
